Eclipse Engineering determine an optimized stiffener layout for a Limestone Daybin

Customer need
Determine a cost-effective stiffening arrangement and support design for their limestone daybin.

The challenge
The contents of the bin applied hydrostatic pressure on the vessel sides, which must be resisted with stiffeners. The vessel required a support design to withstand a dead load of more than 500 kip.

The solution
Eclipse engineers used off-the-shelf structural shapes to design an optimized stiffening system with integrated support lugs. It was determined that increasing the shell plate for the lower portion of the vessel was less costly than excessively stiffening a thinner plate.
